6 Things you Need to Know Before you get Microneedling
Before Micro-Needling
For some, needles are a cringe worthy thought. Especially when it involves the needles running across your face. We promise, it is not as bad as it sounds! There are a few things you to do before Micro-Needling. Automated Micro-Needling (also known as Collagen Induction Therapy or CIT) is for the treatment of fine lines, acne scars and improvement of the skin’s overall appearance. During this procedure, tiny needles are used to create controlled micro-injuries to the skin in order to produce collagen and elastin. The skin’s repair process results in a thicker dermis with the appearance of softer wrinkles. The micropen also creates superficial micro-channels which allow topical gels, creams and serums to be absorbed more effectively into the skin. I like to say that Microneedling is comparable to aerating your lawn. You create tiny little holes in the skin to create better skin, just as you do for your lawn.Keep reading to learn about the 6 things you should know before going into a Micro-needling treatment.
1. Micro-Needling Works on a Wide Variety of Skin Issues
While Microneedling is most commonly used for resurfacing skin texture, the treatment also combats discoloration, enlarged pores, acne scars, wrinkles, fine lines and crepey skin. Even if you don't have any major skin issues, Microneedling can give you a beautiful dewy appearance and glow.
2. Micro-Needling can be Customized
Before your treatment, an assessment of your skin should be conducted by the esthetician. Depending on what your concerns are will depend on the needle depth. If you have deep acne scars, the needle will need to go further down into the skin. While, if your only skin issue is something such as pores and pigment, that requires less depth. Different serums during the treatment may also be used to address a range of concerns.
3. Micro-Needling Should not be Super Painful
While Micro-needling may sound intimidating, it’s commonly described as only a little awkward feeling due to the prickly sensation. Of course there a couple factors that will determine how much or little discomfort one might feel. The first factor is how deep the needles are going into the skin. If you're receiving a more superficial treatment, then there is nothing to worry about, pain will be little to none. However, if your skin calls for a more in depth needling, it would be best to request a topical numbing anesthetic to help subside any discomfort. Overall, everyone has different pain tolerances and you should talk to the esthetician if you have any concerns.
4. Multiple Sessions are Highly Recommended
Similar to Chemical Peels or Microdermabrasion, multiple sessions are needed to see dramatic and lasting results with Microneedling. While you will see an immediate glow from just one session, and visible changes to the skin develop over the course of several days and weeks. Results continue to improve up to 6 months after the treatment as collagen production continues. Some patients only require a single treatment, once per year to achieve optimal results. However, it is recommended for most patients to receive a series of 2-3 treatments spaced about 6-8 weeks apart. For patients with deep wrinkles, advanced photo-aging, stretch marks or acne scars it is recommended to receive 6-8 sessions at 6 week intervals.
5. Prepare for a Little Bit of Downtime
Immediately after the treatment you will notice a bright redness to the skin. The total healing time depends on the depth of needles used and the number of passes your skincare professional performs. On average, patients will red up to 2 to 4 days. Some patients heal completely in as little as 24 hours
6. There are Pre-treatment Instructions
In order to insure you heal from the treatment as fast as possible there are a few pre-treatment instructions. If you are taking a blood thinner, fish oil, aspirin or any other medication and you have the tendency to bleed easily while on, please tell your technician. Additionally, if you are under a physician’s care and need to discontinue your medication for a few days, always ask your physician prior to each Micro-Needling treatment. Take Arnica Montana pre and post procedure to alleviate bruising and swelling (Customers can purchase this at health food stores, follow manufacturers directions). Take Arnica Montana 24 hours before treatment and continue for 3 days after treatment.
