Facial Shaving VS Dermaplaning

The Difference Between the Two Seemingly Similar Procedures:

It’s all over the internet and it took the beauty world by storm. What are we talking about? Facial Shaving! At-home facial shaving, as well as professional dermaplaning, are not new procedures, but have been around for decades. Why is it trending now? We believe it has to do with more and more celebrities admitting to “shaving” their faces, and the overall spike in the skincare industry. While both treatments, at home and professional shaving, are great additions to your skincare routine, a lot of people are under the impression that they achieve the same results. Sadly this is not true. We are here to clear some things up between the two.

What is Dermaplaning?

Dermaplaning is an exfoliating treatment done by our trained professionals with a single-use surgical blade. With this treatment we are able to slough off the first couple layers of dry skin cells allowing products we use in office, and the ones you use at home, to penetrate deeper. Dermaplaning also removes fine vellus hair (peach fuzz), leaving your skin incredibly smooth.

What is Facial Shaving?

Facial Shaving takes on the same concept as Dermaplaning, however it is done at home and performed on yourself. The “Dermaplaning” blades that can be bought at a drugstore are going to be pretty dull compared to the surgical blades used in professional dermaplaning. Additionally, because the facial shaving is self-performed, the concerns of safety and technique increases.

What makes Professional Dermaplaning a better choice than shaving at home?

Expertise and knowledge. There are plenty of facial treatments that people attempt at home, including dermaplaning. The difference will always be the professional grade treatment received in a Medical Spa by a trained Esthetician with the proper tools. You are not going to be able to get the same results at home.  A professional dermaplane treatment is done with a surgical-grade scalpel, in swift, delicate strokes. The duller blades anyone can buy will, unfortunately, never get as close of a shave. The professional treatment is also done at least four weeks apart. Recommendations for home shaving often advise doing it weekly, or even bi-weekly. This constant rate of exfoliation can cause skin irritation.

A Very Common Question: Once the vellus hair is removed will it grow back thicker?

This is a common misunderstanding and the answer is no, Dermaplaning will not cause the hair to grow back thicker or darker. This is physiologically impossible.  The soft, fine vellus hair will grow back slowly – usually in about 4 weeks. (There are two types of hair that grow on our bodies: Vellus hair is the thin, fine, soft hair that typically covers the entire body. Terminal hair is the coarse hair that grows on the head, face in men, underarms, legs and pubic areas.) Dermaplaning, waxing, tweezing or any other depilatory form of hair removal cannot alter the type of hair grown in any given area.
