Sun Exposure: Causing Your Skin to Age Prematurely
Sun Exposure: Causing Your Skin to Age Prematurely
Sunscreen and the importance of SPF has come a long way in the past 5 to 10 years. By now we have been educated over and over again on the importance of sunscreen, yet I come across so many clients who still are not protecting their skin on a daily basis. Consider this: 1 in 5 Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime. Living in Arizona we see the sun almost daily. Even if you don’t plan on laying out or being outside for an extended amount of time, wearing sunscreen is still important. The accumulation of sun exposure through the car window on the way to and from work or running errands, all add up. Besides the risk of skin cancer, using a daily SPF (ideally 30 SPF-50 SPF) is also the first step in preventative aging. Unprotected sun exposure speeds up the aging process causing fine lines and wrinkles, loss of elasticity and uneven skin tone or brown/red spots.ZONA Med Spa always offers complimentary consultations. We are here to guide you in your skin care journey, even you need help finding the right sunscreen for your skin. As of 2012 the FDA regulated sunscreen to be properly labeled “broad-spectrum” meaning both UVA and UVB protection. Using a sunscreen for both the face and body that is broad-spectrum protection is most important as UVA and UVB both affect the skin differently.
UVA Rays: The Aging Rays
- Penetrates deeply into the skin, deeper than UVB, damaging collagen and cells
- Plays a key role in the acceleration of wrinkling, pigmentation (brown spots and sun damage), blotchy skin tone and redness, skin roughening and loss of elasticity
- Can pass through glass (office and vehicles)
- Not affected by weather or altitude (meaning even on cloudy days the UVA rays are there)
- Present all day, every day of the year
- UVA is 50 times more prevalent than UVB rays
- Can contribute to the development or increase the risk of skin cancer
UVB Rays: The Burning Rays
- Penetrates the skin more superficially than UVA, mostly affecting the outer layer of the skin
- Is the primary cause of sunburns and tanning that increase the risk of cancer
- UVB varies with the time of day and seasons, and are stronger in the summertime
- The SPF (sunburn protection factor) number of a sunscreen indicates the level of protection from UVB only
