Can Lip Fillers Replace Makeup?

While this sounds a little far-fetched, lip fillers “replacing” makeup is actually pretty common. Turns out the newest lip filler techniques are copying your favorite lip products. While we wouldn’t recommend throwing out your Kylie Jenner lip kits, we do think this new lip filler technique is pretty interesting. Keep reading to discover all the ways in which injectors are using filler to mimic the effects of lip lines, lip gloss, highlighter and contour.

Lip Liner

As we age, our vermilion boarder (the line around our lips) becomes less sharp. Luckily, a touch of HA filler can help to create that definition again. Most injectors use what they call the microdroplet technique, using extremely small amounts of filler. With the microdroplet technique, injectors are able to create more defined lips overall, similar to the effect you get with a lip pencil. Not to mention, with our more defined pout you won't have to worry about lipstick bleeding until the filler dissolves.

Lip Gloss

Lip fillers love water. Why? Because your filler is almost entirely made up of hyaluronic acid. Hyaluronic acid is one of the most hydrophilic (water-loving) molecules in nature, and is dubbed as ‘natures moisturizer’. In fact, hyaluronic acid can bind up to 1,000 times its weight in water. This means that getting lip filler already makes you more prone to having nice hydrated lips, creating the slight appearance of lip gloss. According to Jessica Wu (a dermatologist in Los Angeles),  she finds that injecting small amounts of the HA filler superficially – just under the lips surface – help bind water and restores the youthful plumpness.

Highlighter

The cupid’s bow tends to flatten with age. However, lip fillers can easily restore its shape and volume. Injecting at an angle, small amounts of HA filler are placed at the peaks of the cupid’s bow and up along the philtral columns (the vertical indentations on the upper lip under the nose). This is where we typically apply highlighter, therefore the added definition of filler in these areas is a highlighter on its own.

Contour

Contouring your lips? Sounds weird, we know. But contouring is actually very common. To make lips look plump, beauty gurus dab lip gloss or lip stick onto the center of the lower lip. This is the same idea with lip fillers. To make them look pillowy, injectors place more filler in the center of the lips, rather than on the sides.So there you have it! Lip fillers might not replace some of those makeup products completely, but they will surly help enhance them.
