How to Prevent Acne From Wearing Masks
Life is crazy right now. We're adjusting to the new standard of normal which happens to mean: wearing masks out in public. While you may not have rashes, broken blood vessels, or other serious skin issues like essential workers do, your skin may get irritated, start breaking out, or form more blackheads than normal.
The problem with cloth masks is that we are constantly exhaling into them, causing moisture buildup which clogs pores, creating inflammation and possibly reducing essential fats. Speaking of constantly exhaling into the mask, you may have noticed it gets a little hot and steamy in there. The extra sweating in this area can also cause a build-up of oil leading to whiteheads and blackheads.
To help combat this, we're here to share some tips on how to keep your skin looking clear even under that mask!
Religious Cleansing
If you're required to wear a mask at work, cleanse your face like normal in the morning. Immediately when you get home, cleanse your face with a gentle cleanser, and then once more with your regular cleanser before bed. If you are simply running an errand and wear a mask, just use a gentle cleanser after.
Hyaluronic Acid is Your BFF
Keeping your skin hydrated and moisturized (yes they are two different things, see blog here) is going to be key to protect it from irritation. Hyaluronic acid helps attract and retain moisture in your skin. This ingredient will help combat the loss of moisture from inhaling and exhaling in your mask. If you use a Hyaluronic acid serum, make sure to lock it in with a moisturizer.
Avoid Heavy Oil Based Products
Oil, mixed with the increased moisture locked in our mask, can form a waxy substance in our pores that can lead to breakouts. Avoid heavier moisturizers, makeup, and other skincare products to reduce the chance of breakouts. Opt for a water-based moisturizer and a tinted moisturizer instead of foundation.
Don't Neglect your Lips
The natural barrier of your lips can be exhausted quickly from the increased moisture. If you find that your lips are more dry and chapped than usual, make sure to reach for your favorite hydrating chapstick (ZONA chapsticks are the best!). For an extra boost, we recommend sleeping in an overnight lip mask.
Clean You Mask
If you use a disposable mask then of course, please throw it out after its single use. If you have a reusable mask, like most of us do now, we recommend to machine wash them after every use. If your reusable happens to have a filter lined in it, hand wash and air dry it to ensure longevity.
