How to Layer Skin-Care Products in the Right Order
Okay so if you've been following ZONA for a long long time, then you might remember this old blog. But since it's been a while, I thought we could all use a refresher because the order really matters! Here's how to layer your skincare products in the right order.
Why does order matter?
So why does it really matter the order in which we put our skincare products on, you ask? According to Chelsea, one of ZONA Med Spa’s estheticians, “layering the products in order helps for optimal product absorption”. For example, if you put a moisturizer on before a serum, the heavy thick cream of the moisturizer would completely block out the light liquid serum from ever absorbing. That's why a good rule of thumb is to layer thin-to-thick or liquid-to-cream.
Some quick tips:
- Take a break! Make sure to wait a minute or two in between each product. Some of the thinner products will absorb almost instantly but the thicker ones will need a second. So brush your teeth, comb your hair, do whatever you gotta do so the product absorbs fully.
- If you use a facial oil, be sure to add it AFTER your moisturizer. Oils can penetrate moisturizers, but not vice versa.
- Remember Retinols are to only be put on at night.
- You can make your vitamin C serum last longer by only using it in the morning.
The Correct order:
Cleanser
Start with a cleanser to remove all makeup, dirt, or oil from your face and neck. A common question we receive is why we have to wash our face in the morning if we just washed at night; and while is extremely important to wash the day away at night, your skin recovers during the night which means you have more oil and dead skin cells to sought off in the morning.
Toner
Most people choose to skip toner, however, there are new breeds of toner out there designed for multiple purposes. They can act as a delivery system for antioxidants, vitamin B derivatives, and even toning acids. Just make sure you are using a toner, not an astringent! A lot of people believe astringent is just like toners or are toner, however, astringents have alcohol in it that with strip your skin. Also, double-check that you are using a toner that is right for your skin type.
Serum
Serums are super concentrated so you want them as close to the skin as possible as well. There is a wide range of available ingredients that cater to all different skin needs. Therefore if you are using multiple serums, try to apply the ones with the thinnest consistency first.
Treatment
By treatment, we mean any retinol, anti-aging, or acne treatments you may be using. And remember, to evaluate the thin or thickness of each treatment product to see which order they should be put on.
Eye Cream
It’s a common misconception that eye creams are only for older people, but it actually couldn’t be more opposite. It’s very important that you use an eye cream twice a day and to start this routine in your early 20’s.
Moisturizer
Finally, you are at the last step! The best time to apply moisturizer is when the skin is still moist, so after using your cleanser, pat your face gently, apply your treatments and serums and then put on your moisturizer to lock in the hydration. In the morning it’s crucial that you use sunscreen, so if your moisturizer doesn’t already have at least SPF 30 in it, applying a separate SPF product will be the very last step
