How To Keep Your Skincare & Beauty Regimen Sanitary
If someone was to peek inside your makeup bag, your skincare shelf, or even your bathroom skin area, would you be embarrassed? Don't worry, us too. With everything going on in the world right now, it’s easy to neglect our beauty loot when it comes to keeping things sanitary. However, because we use these products around our eyes, nose, and mouth it's especially important to remain diligent about cleanliness.
To help you bring your attention to this part of your household deep clean, we will be sharing the best practices to help keep your makeup and skincare application sanitary.
1.Wash Your Hands Before Beginning Your Regimen
Of course, you should be regularly washing your hands throughout the day, but it's especially important to do so before touching your face. Hands should be washed for at least 20 seconds, however, if needed hand sanitizers with at least 60% alcohol are effective. Remember to get all surfaces such as the palms, back of the hands, thumbs, between the fingers, and under the fingernails. Finish up with drying your hands with a disposable paper towel.
2. Don’t Dip Your Fingers In The Product
Most products have airtight packaging, which is much more sanitary, but jars/pots and dropper bottles are a breeding ground for bacteria. Even if your hands are clean, avoid dipping your fingers into the product jar. Use a spatula or spoon from your kitchen instead! With dropper bottles, drop the serums into your hand and then apply to your face. Don't let the dropper bottle touch your face!
3. Wash You Face Cloths Regularly
When drying your face, make sure it is with a freshly laundered washcloths. Washcloths are often not cleaned properly between uses and are therefore full of bacteria and germs. Ideally, you would us a freshly washed cloth every time, but we know that's not very realistic, so just try as much as you can.
4. Toss Expired Makeup and Skin Care Products
Skincare and makeup products do expire. Not only do they lose their potency close to their expiration and past expiration, but they're a breeding ground for bacteria that can cause infections, breakouts, and skin flare-ups. Any good skincare product should put an expiration date on the bottle, however, if yours does not, a good rule of thumb is a 2-year shelf-life. As for makeup, you may not have known this but to see its expiration, look for an open jar icon, it will include a number inside of it that reveals how many months the makeup will last after it has been opened.
5. Routinely Clean Your Brushes, Tools, and Sponges
We've already done a blog post on this, here, but we recommend cleaning your brushes and sponges once a week. Every more so if it's cold or flu season. Warm water and gentle soap are all you need to get the job done!
6. Wash Your Pillowcases
Beauty sleep totally counts as a part of your beauty regiment! Sleeping on dirty pillowcases increases your chances of breakouts and bacteria lurking on your face. Protip: It has been said that silk pillowcases are the best option because they don't absorb as much moisture so your skin will be hydrated and fresh in the morning.
7. Deep Clean Your Cosmetic Bags and Bathroom Surfaces
Our cosmetic bags often times becomes a catch-all. A clean bag can very quickly become a dusty and grimy one, every time we reach inside we expose our hand (and then our faces) to a whole host of bacteria. Whenever you can, take everything out, wipe everything down with an alcohol solution, and put the actually makeup bag in the washer (if able). At the same time, wipe down the products sitting on your shelves and the sink.
We hoped this help you make a handy little checklist for you!
