Does Your Skin Get Bored?
You've just started a new skincare routine and your skin has never looked better! Flash forward a few months - do you stop noticing results? Is your skin getting bored? This is a question we get all the time and there's a couple of things that go into the answer. In this weeks blog, we go over whether or not your products can become ineffective or stop working, and if it’s beneficial to change up your skincare routine from time to time.
Can my skincare products lose effectiveness over time?
With almost all skincare products, the answer is no. Your skin doesn't just decide to stop liking the products you are giving it. This is because there is no system for your skin to become immune to the effects of products. No matter how long you've been using a product, your skin will absorb it and start using it immediately.
But there is one product that is an exception; Retinol. Our skin can build up a tolerance to Topical Retinols. For most people this is a good thing because it results in less 'negative' side effects such as dryness, irritation, or flaking.
Why did I notice such a big difference at first and now nothing?
It happens all the time, the new products fix what was bothering us and then it hits a kind of plateau because it's done its job. What the products are now doing is preventing those concerns from reappearing. For example, let's say your goal was to brighten your complexion and you start using a Vitamin C serum and Hydroquinone brightening cream. These products will give you quick results, but once it's lightened and brightened and created that even-toned look, there are fewer results that you might see over time. It's a matter of perception! We often forget where we started, and we get used to seeing ourselves after the product has done its initial job.
Is it ever a good idea to change up my routine?
We get it, boredom strikes and it's fun to try new trendy products. We totally understand this! There are SO many products out there to try. If you're dying to try a new product, then go ahead! Just don't go and change your whole routine around. We recommend only one product at a time. If you can resist the urge to change up your routine then that's probably best. If it ain't broke don't fix it!
However, there are two exceptions - changing seasons and aging. When the seasons change, most people feel the need to adjust some of their products to fit the environment. For example, a lot of people switch to a heavy moisturizer in the winter and lighter serums/sunscreens in the summer. Another exception is aging. Our skin is a living organism and evolves over time. By your late 20's and early 30's, you'll definitely want to add in a Retinol to your routine, and by your 40's you'll want to incorporate a Vitamin C serum if you haven't already. Each decade will require different things from your skin.
There you have it! Your skin does not get bored - keep up your routine and keep your expectations reasonable.
