7 Unexpected Reasons You’re Breaking Out

Sometimes The Problem Is More Simple Than You Think

There are many unexpected causes of breakouts, blackheads, and clogged pores. While we know that the main causes of acne are hormonal imbalances, diet, and skincare products/usage; there may be a couple of unexpected reasons for a breakout that you haven’t thought of yet. They’re a little sneakier and creep into your daily routine in ways that might surprise you. The good news is, there are easy fixes for all of them!

1.Your Hands Okay, this one is a little more obvious but is still something that we can forget about. Our hands are covered in dirt, oil, and bacteria. If you are constantly touching your face it can spread the bacteria that’s already on your skin around and adds additional bacteria. This, especially for acne prone people, could be the culprit to their breakouts. The solution: avoid touching your face as much as possible, in addition to washing your hands frequently.

2. Your TowelsIt’s easy to forget just how much bacteria can build up in your hand and body towels. First and foremost, you should be using separate towels for your face and body. Not only do our towels hold onto bacteria issue like a magnet, but your body towel will also contain the products you put on your bodies such as moisturizers, fragrances, and hair products that may not bode well on your face. Ideally, you should be washing your face and body towels every couple of days. If you’re prone to breakouts, possibly even more.

3.Your Makeup Brushes Makeup brushes collect, obviously makeup, but also dirt, oil, and debris. All which wreak havoc on the skin.  When applying makeup with a dirty brush, the bacteria on the brush is then transferred to your skin; which can cause acne and blackheads. Even the built-up foundation or powder can create the brushes to becomes rough and scratchy, which leads to irritated skin. Trust me, I personally understand how hard it is to muster up the energy to clean all your makeup brushes. However, once you get in the habit of doing it once a week, your brushes and skin will thank you! Here's how to clean your makeup brushes!

4.Your Hair ProductsThere are tons of common ingredients in hair products that that are known for clogging pores and triggering breakouts. They range from parabens, sulfates, alcohol, and silicone. Bad news for face and back acne sufferers. To fix this, it’s, unfortunately, a trial-and-error process. Look for products that are paraben and sulfate free and see if that does that trick. If not, all natural hair care products are most likely the way to go. Pro Tip: Wash your face after you shampoo and condition your hair to ensure all those harsh ingredients aren't lingering on your skin. 5. Your MakeupJust like your hair products, there are plenty of less than favorable ingredients in makeup products. Keep an eye out for non-comedogenic products, which are oil free and nonpore clogging. Mineral powders are also a great alternative to heavy foundations since these sit on top of your skin rather than absorbing into it.

6. Pillow CasesSimilarly to your towels, residual makeup, bacteria, dirt, and oil can build up on your pillowcase. Thus interfering with your freshly washed face when you hit the sheets. Wash your pillowcases at least once a week to help reduce this build up. Additionally, you should be conscious of the type of detergent you are using. It’s better to use fragrance-free products for people with sensitive or acne-prone skin.  Dryer sheet has also been known to cause breakouts, so possibly take those out of the equation.

  1. Your Cellphone
phone causes acne

Your phone screen collects bacteria from pretty much everything you touch each day. That can get real nasty, real fast. Just think about all the surfaces our phone touches every day, now think about how we press it against our face when we talk on the phone. The solution? Wipe down the front and back of your phone with a disinfectant at least a couple times a week. As with everything, the reasons we breakout varies from person to person. So, don’t be upset if following some of these tips isn’t the magical cure-all for your skin. It is, however, great to be aware of these unexpected possible causes, and still keeping up with them as much as you can!
